Please Note

Vietnamese-Canadian classical pianist Dang Thai-son will play Schubert’s “Allegretto in C Minor, D. 915” and “12 German Dances D. 790,” Chopin’s “Barcarolle, Op. 60” and “Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante,” Liszt’s “Reminiscences of Norma” and Paderewski’s “Melody,” “Legend,” “Nocturne,” “Menuet” and “Krakowiak.”

Dang began studying piano in Hanoi with a professor at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. He was discovered by a Russian pianist, Isaac Katz, who was on a visit to Vietnam in 1974 and helped him pursue advanced training at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia. In Moscow, he studied with Vladimir Natanson, a pupil of Samuil Feinberg, and subsequently with Dmitri Bashkirov.

He was awarded the first prize and gold medal at the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, as well as honorary prizes for the best performances of a mazurka, a polonaise and a concerto, although Dang’s victory was somewhat influenced by the elimination of Ivo Pogorelich in the third round. It was the first time that a top international competition was won by an Asian pianist. He has received particular acclaim for the sonority and poetry in his interpretations of music of Chopin and the French repertoire.
