FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup, the highest-level 3×3 basketball event in Asia, will be held in Shenzhen for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021, according to a press conference held at Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Center on Thursday morning.
Sponsored by FIBA (the International Basketball Federation) and the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), this year’s FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup will take place at the Nanshan Culture and Sports Center from April 29 to May 1.
The match is co-organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, Nanshan District Government and SunsSports (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., and has forged a partnership with accounting firm PwC.
FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup is classified as a top-level international event by the General Administration of Sport of China. The top 12 men’s and women’s national teams from Asian countries will vie for the gold medals at this annual event.
“FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup is the most important event in the Asia territory. I’m very happy that Shenzhen will be the host of the event. It is an important game for teams to increase their ranking points,” said Ignacio Soriano, FIBA 3×3 World Tour organizer.
Chai Wensheng, head of CBA’s 3×3 basketball division, said the division has already launched a basketball match that is open to the public to select talented basketball players. The winners of the match will be chosen as members of the national youth training team and have the opportunity to participate in the Asia Cup.
Apart from the match, a number of basketball-themed activities aimed at cultivating ball kids, as well as the Asia Basketball Culture Festival, will be held during the Asia Cup to promote the sport.
On June 9, the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee announced that 3×3 basketball would become an official Olympic sport at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.
