A string of folk events, such as riddle-solving, temple fairs and folk art demonstrations, will be held today and tomorrow around the city to mark the Lantern Festival.

All events are free and only the activities held at Sisyphe require sign-up via the QR code below.

Temple fair

Traditional Chinese folk events, such as paper-cutting, lantern-making, ethnic garment shows and an ancient game of throwing arrows into a distant pot, will be held. A parade featuring yangge, lion dance and ethnic dances will begin at 3 p.m. Yangge is a form of folk dance developed from villages in northern China. Dancers dress up in colorful costumes. Some dancers use props like a waist drum, dancing fan, faux donkeys or boats. Lion dance performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune.

Time: 2 p.m., March 2

Venue: Xiangmi Park, 30 Nonglin Road, Futian District (福田区农林路30号香蜜公园)

Folk art

A Chaoshan gongfu tea ceremony, involving the ritualized preparation and presentation of tea, will be presented, along with paper-cutting, dough sculpture and straw-knitting. Visitors can also watch the making of sugar paintings, a traditional Chinese form of folk art using hot, liquid sugar to create figures such as a dragon, bird and fish. Select a figure determined by spinning an arrow on a wheel and have a sweet bite of the Lantern Festival. Meanwhile, tai chi and guqin performances will also be held.

Time: 2:30-4:30 p.m., March 1

Venue: Baode Square, Nantou Old Town, Nanshan District (南山区南头古城报德广场)
