Swiss photographer Salvatore Vitale will give a lecture on his project “How to Secure a Country” at OCAT Shenzhen this Friday. No sign-up is necessary.

Started in 2015, the project, which has already been awarded various accolades including the 2017 PHM Grant, is to show the Swiss security system from within by accessing the whole apparatus to almost become part of it while at the same time refraining from adopting an investigative approach or a judgmental outlook.

In 2015-2016, he is in the recipient of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia’s grant for his long-term research on the production of security in Switzerland.

“The reason that led me to want to explore such a matter is a personal one: It all started with something akin to an identity crisis. On Feb. 9, 2014, the Swiss people voted in favor of a federal popular initiative ‘against mass immigration’ and, having lived in Switzerland since the age of 18, such outcome was unexpected and hit me very hard. I felt very angry and started investigating how such hostile attitude had originated,” said Vitale in a recent interview on Vogue magazine.

Vitale is also the co-founder and editor-in-chief of YET magazine, a Switzerland-based international photography magazine which showcases works by both emerging and established photographers as well as in-depth content focusing on the evolution of photography with a particular eye on the contemporary field.

Vitale is currently exhibiting his photo series “The Moon was Broken” at the newly opened “Follow_Me” exhibition at OCAT Shenzhen which runs until June.
