The State Council has approved the establishment of Guangming District, according to a release from the Guangdong Provincial Government on Friday.

The establishment of Guangming District means that it has been instituted with the full range of functions of the other eight districts in Shenzhen.

Although the physical size of Guangming remains unchanged, the new district will have district-level legislative, political advisory and judicial organs like Futian, Nanshan, Luohu, Longgang, Bao’an and Yantian.

Guangming District will have six subdistricts — Guangming, Gongming, Xinhu, Fenghuang, Yutang and Matian.

The upgrade of Guangming New Area will reduce the number of new areas in Shenzhen to one, namely Dapeng New Area.

Guangming New Area, bordering Dongguan City in the northwest of Shenzhen, was created in 2007 as a “functional area.”

Covering an area of 156.1 square kilometers, Guangming is home to 560,100 people. Its 2017 GDP reached 85 billion yuan (US$13.28 billion).
