A variety of Chinese ration coupons issued between 1955 and 1994 are on display at an exhibition at Futian Cultural Hall · Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall.

The exhibition features more than 300 grain coupons, oil coupons, cloth coupons, meat coupons, soap coupons, furniture coupons, bicycle coupons and watch coupons issued by 29 provinces and cities in China.
China’s commodity rationing system was established in 1955 when commodities were scarce during the early days of the People’s Republic of China’s founding. Without coupons, citizens were not permitted to purchase the goods even if they had money. The system loosened its grip on commerce in the 1990s, following the growth of industrial and agricultural production. In 1984, Shenzhen was the first city in China to stop using commodity ration coupons.

Chinese commodity ration coupons now have become a popular collection item. According to China Daily, the price for a 1955-issued coupon can be as high as 1,500 yuan.
