"Fugue and Replacement," an exhibition featuring more than 40 oil paintings created by Sichuan Fine Arts Institute president Pang Maokun, was opened yesterday at Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shekou.
"Fold-Away Eden"
As one of the most important contemporary Chinese artists, Pang holds a master's degree in oil painting from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and his works have been exhibited in or collected by galleries in the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.
"Lady With an Ermine"
Pang is renowned for his expertise in classical Western oil paintings, but in 2017, he began to modify the perception of well-known scenes of great classic Western oil paintings, infiltrating them with a provocative and ironic effect.
"Narcissus's New World"
In Pang's re-creation of "Lady With an Ermine," Cecilia Gallerani wears a leather jacket and winks to viewers. In Italian Baroque master Caravaggio's "Narcissus," Pang adds a pair of VR goggles to the handsome youth who leans with both hands over the water as he gazes at himself and falls in love with his reflection.

The artist also becomes a spectator in the background of Jan van Eyck's "Arnolfini Portrait." Wearing a red polo shirt and blue-rimmed glasses, Pang sits in the chair behind Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife in the 1434 painting. He also sits cross-legged beside Pope Innocent X in Diego Velazquez's 1650 painting "Portrait of Innocent X."
"Reclassic No. 10"
The many paintings on display merge the classic and the contemporary, the past and the present, the West and the East. "This painting series is about reclaiming the classic by getting inside it, rediscovering it and taking a new path," said Pang in an earlier interview. "I'm always trying to make a dialogue with the classics, embracing the originals and showing how the same material and the same techniques can be used to create something new today."
