Four economic crime suspects were repatriated to Shenzhen on Friday thanks to close cooperation between Shenzhen police and their Thai counterparts, sznews.com reported yesterday.

Two of the fugitives were allegedly involved in two major illegal fund-raising activities through online lending platforms.

On July 16 this year, the Luohu police received a report that a company called Shenzhen Baiyimao Financial Services Co. Ltd. was suspected of illegally absorbing public deposits.

It was reported that the suspect surnamed Wang had sold investment and financial products on the P2P lending platform without approval from China’s financial regulatory authorities and without the qualifications to absorb public deposits.

The case involved more than 5,000 victims and 420 million yuan (US$60.4 million). The police arrested six suspects, but Wang, the principal criminal, fled overseas.

After a monthlong investigation, the Shenzhen police, assisted by local police in Thailand, captured Wang at a residential estate in Bangkok on the afternoon of Oct. 24.

Another fugitive, surnamed Zhan from Shenzhen Niuniutongbao Technology Culture Industry Co. Ltd., was also busted in the cross-border hunt. Zhan was suspected of illegal fund-raising and operating a pyramid scheme.

In May, the Nanshan police launched an investigation into Shenzhen Niuniutongbao Technology Culture Industry Co. Ltd. The company claimed that investors would get high returns by leasing its vending machines, but instead it illegally transferred and squandered the funds.

The police arrested three suspects during an action, but Zhan, the actual person in control of the company, absconded abroad to evade punishment. With the aid of Thai police, Zhan was arrested by Shenzhen police in Bangkok in mid-September.

A total of 17 economic fugitives were repatriated from Thailand to China on Friday. The 17 suspects were wanted in Shandong, Yunnan, Fujian, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Hunan, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces.
