By the end of 2020, the water treatment plants in Shenzhen are expected to treat 7.75 million tons of used water on a daily basis, with 19 plants being built or expanded under a plan of the city’s 13th Five-Year Plan concerning water quality improvement, sznews.com reported Thursday.

The capacity of the 31 water treatment plants back in 2015, which was also the last year of the city’s 12th Five-year Plan, was 4.8 million tons of water per day. When the goals of the 13th Five-year Plan are completed in the next two years, water treatment capacity will be much greater.

According to the current five-year requirement, Shenzhen will have built or expanded a total of 19 water treatment plants between 2015 and 2020. This year is regarded as a key stage in accomplishing this goal.

The water affairs authority explained that Shenzhen plans to complete the expansion work on five water treatment plants in Shajing, Songgang, Guangming, Banxuegang and Pudixia in 2018. Also, work is going to be done to increase the treatment capacity of 12 existing water treatment plants.

As of Oct. 27, the construction projects of water treatment plants were on schedule, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Water Affairs Bureau.

For instance, the second phase of the construction project at Songgang Water Treatment Plant passed an environmental protection examination and was opened for business at the end of June. Water processed by the plant meets the standard for consumption.

Also, 96.3 percent of the second phase of the Shajing Water Treatment Plant has been completed. The main structure of the plant was put into use Sept. 27.

More work will be carried out throughout the year to accomplish the annual goals, according to the water affairs authority.
