The first public nursing home was put into use Dec. 26.

Located in Taoyuan Subdistrict, Nanshan District, with a floor area of 40,000 square meters, the nursing home has 800 beds, which offer priority to Shenzhen’s aged residents who receive special care or a basic living allowance from the city government and are disabled or have dementia.

It is estimated that the number of people over 60 years old currently living in Shenzhen is over 1.2 million, 320,000 of whom are Shenzhen residents. Based on the current demographic structure, nursing home services are expected to be in high demand in 2020. As a result, with the support of relevant departments and the public, the city has made preparations such as this to address a need expected to explode in the near future.

Additionally, the nursing home is exploring smart management methods, such as nursing robots supported by facial recognition technology and alarm systems for elderly Alzheimer’s patients. The nursing home also provides an online hospital consultation function.

Currently, an evaluation platform for the public nursing home is open for the elderly across the city to apply.
