“Renascence of Traditional Culture: Tsinghua University Cultural Heritage Protection and Innovation Research Achievements Exhibition” is being held at Block 16 Creative Park in Nanshan District.

The exhibition has six areas: “Buddhist Grace,” “The Majestic Mansion,” “Confucius’ Footstep,” “Ancient City Stories,” “Achievements of Potential Artists” and “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.”

The exhibits feature augmented reality, virtual reality and digital technologies to visualize historical scenes and give visitors an immersive experience.

“Buddhist Grace”

“Buddhist Grace” showcases videos and interactive projections of Mogao Cave 159 in Dunhuang. The construction of the Mogao Caves is generally believed to have begun sometime in the fourth century. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Dunhuang became the main hub of commerce along the Silk Road and a major religious center. A large number of caves were constructed at Mogao during this era and at its height, there were more than 1,000 caves. Murals in the caves are valued for the scale and richness of content as well as their artistry.

Now there are more than 700 known caves in Mogao and, through the years, some murals were damaged. The Dunhuang Academy (the former Research Institute of Dunhuang Art) has been engaging in protecting the site and its contents since 1944, including making reproductions.

“The Majestic Mansion”

“The Majestic Mansion” is about the digital gallery in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The digital gallery is located at Duanmen Gate, the principal entrance to the imperial palace grounds. The gallery hall features screens displaying and explaining architectural features and cultural relics.

The gallery introduces the palace through a digital architectural model and gives visitors better access to the museum’s treasures through a virtual reality display.

“Confucius’ Footstep”

“Confucius’ Footstep” showcases the digital and interactive projection of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) painter Jiao Bingzhen’s painting “The Life of Confucius.” “Ancient City Stories” displays an old lane in Yiyang, Hunan Province. “Achievements of Potential Artists” features the beauty of Chinese oracle bone script, paper-making and fashion design with traditional Chinese elements.

“A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains”

“A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” showcases the digital and interactive projection of Song Dynasty (960-1279) painter Wang Ximeng’s 11.9-meter long masterpiece “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains.” The painting, finished by Wang when he was only 18 in 1113, is one of the largest in Chinese history, and has been described as one of the greatest works of Chinese art. The painting is in the permanent collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
