Shenzhen will explore ways to converge the development of traditional cabs and app-based taxis, according to an official with the city’s transport commission at a report releasing ceremony Saturday.

The number of traditional cabs in Shenzhen has reached 22,000, all of which are electricity-powered, and the city will take the opportunity to converge the development of traditional cabs and app-based taxis, according to the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily quoting the official.

There are about 40,000 app-based cabs currently operating in the city, the report said. Released by Dida Ride on the taxi services in 80 cities in China, the report suggests exploring new paths for the traditional taxi industry using big data.

“The taxi industry reform needs to satisfy passengers’ needs and deepen the integration of taxi and online car hailing,” said Li Gang, vice president of China Transport Association, on Saturday. Taxi companies are encouraged to develop Internet-enabled services, and regulations should be enacted and perfected to regulate car-hailing service platforms.
