Meaning:

“逆向” means “reversed,” and “过年” means “spending Chinese New Year.” As many Chinese people working in big cities choose to return to their hometown for family reunions during the Chinese New Year, a “reversed” way to spend the holiday is to invite family members, usually retired parents, to travel to the city where one works and spend the holiday in the workplace city.

Example:

A: 你过年回家的火车票买好了吗?

Nǐ guònián huíjiā de huǒchēpiào mǎi hǎo le ma?

Have you bought a train ticket back to your hometown?

B: 没有,今年我给父母买了机票,让他们来深圳过年。

Méiyǒu ,jīnnián wǒ gěi fùmǔ mǎi le jīpiào,ràng tāmen lái shēnzhèn guònián。

No. I bought air tickets for my parents so that they can join me in Shenzhen and spend the Chinese New Year here.

A: 原来你们今年选择逆向过年啊。

Yuánlái nǐmen jīnnián xuǎnzé nìxiàng guònián a。

So you have chosen to spend the Chinese New Year the “reversed” way.
