Local technologies grace national gala

An array of Shenzhen-made technological elements shown at the Shenzhen subvenue of the 2019 Spring Festival Gala, including robots developed by UBTECH, robot arms and flexible screens, and the sky rail designed and produced by BYD, have attracted wide attention and stirred a heated discussion among people across the country, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.

An innovative city in China, Shenzhen integrated technologies with performances in the Spring Festival Gala to demonstrate its unique charms of youth, innovation and inclusiveness, the Daily said.

One performance in which 30 dancers wore costumes made of flexible screens immediately caught audience members’ eyes. This was the first time that the CCTV Spring Festival Gala had adopted flexible screens in one of its shows. It was also the first time that the idea of applying flexible screens to stage costumes was put into practice in the world, according to the Daily.

“Each screen was made up of over 20 million electronic components, several million electronic integrated circuits and nearly 100 micro-nano film materials. The weight of all these screens equaled only half of the weight of a bottle of water,” said Meng Zhiyun of Royole Corp., which develops the flexible screens.

Besides the unique stage costume, a 5-meter-high tree was created with 400 leaves made of flexible screens, resembling a real tree when waving.

An outdoor projection show covering an area of 2,000 square meters at the Shenzhen subvenue used 54 projectors with ALPD laser display technology developed by Appotronics (APPO), a Shenzhen brand specializing in laser display technology, to light up buildings and trains by means of 3-D mapping technology.

Around 1,300 drones controlled by Damoda appeared in the sky, forming five Chinese characters that read “我爱你中国 (I love you China).” Additionally, 40 flying robots featuring a phoenix came into view with a Chinese song titled “Friends.”

A phoenix-like flying robot developed by Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen. 

Developed by Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen, each flying robot has 2-meter-long wings and weighs 670 grams. Its flying speed can reach 3 to 8 meters per second and it is said to be the flying robot with the biggest wings, longest flying time and strongest loading capability.

UBTECH’s robots named Walker turned up on the show, which once again demonstrated China’s power in the field of AI robots. Six Walkers performed together with Chinese pop stars including Han Xue and Guan Xiaotong. Moreover, two industrial robots developed by Gree played piano with famous pianist Lang Lang.
