SHENZHEN started work on 10 major transport infrastructures — including Mawan Cross-Sea Passage, the city’s first sea tunnel, and renovations of Yueliangwan Boulevard — at a ceremony yesterday.

The 10 projects with a total investment of 28.5 billion yuan (US$4.22 billion) also include the renovation of Meiguan Expressway and the underpass project of Gongchang Road that will go under Sun Yat-sen University Shenzhen Campus.

The 10.6-billion-yuan, 8.05-kilometer Mawan Cross-Sea Passage will link Yueliangwan Boulevard in Qianhai and Dachan Bay Tollgate of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway in Bao’an District.

It will include a 2.5-kilometer road in Qianhai, a 1.1-kilometer underwater tunnel and a 4.45-kilometer road in the Dachan Bay area, according to the construction plan.

It is expected to be finished in three years. Upon completion, the passage will be mainly tasked with cargo traffic at Mawan, Chiwan and Shekou ports and some of the passenger traffic to the port areas. It was also designed to improve the link between Bao’an Central Business District and Qianhai.

“It will ease traffic on roads leading to port areas in Qianhai and improve the urban environment in the area,” Yu Baoming, director with Shenzhen Municipal Transport Commission, said at a launching ceremony yesterday.

Yueliangwan Boulevard is a major trunk road linking Qianhai — a 15-square-kilometer area adjacent to Nanshan District that’s slated for modern service industry development in cooperation with Hong Kong — with downtown Shenzhen through Shennan and Beihuan boulevards, and with Bao’an District through Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway, Bao’an Boulevard and National Highway 107. The boulevard is currently often congested with heavy vehicles. A viaduct, Viaduct D, will be built to link Yueliangwan Boulevard with Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway. The 376-meter project also includes a 211-meter-long bridge and 165-meter-long road base. It will divert southbound vehicles along Yueliangwan Boulevard from Beihuan Boulevard, Shennan Road and Binhai Boulevard to Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway.

Besides road projects, a comprehensive parking facility will be built to the east of the intersection of Fulong and Jianshang roads in Longhua District. The Minzhi Comprehensive Parking Facility will cover 19,779 square meters. It will offer 607 parking places for buses, 190 parking places for cars and 186 charging poles for electric vehicles.
