Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area • 2019 Shenzhen Flower Show, the city’s first international flower show, will be held March 22 at the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden in Luohu District, its organizing committee said at a press conference at the Civic Center on Friday.

It is an important move in Shenzhen’s drive to build itself into a world-class flower city and set an example in the national initiative to build a “Beautiful China,” the organizer said.

While offering an opportunity for local residents to enjoy flowers from around the world, the expo also hopes to serve as a platform to promote collaboration, common development and internationalization in the flower and gardening industry in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, said Zhang Guohong, vice head of the city’s urban management and comprehensive law enforcement bureau.

Shenzhen launched a three-year plan to build a world-class flower city in 2017. As of the end of 2018, it had built 43 avenues with flower landscapes, 20 flower-themed parks, 153 flower-decorated communities and 299 street flower parks.

The show has attracted over 30 famous flower and landscape companies from around the world, which will showcase more than 800 species of flowers. Designers from the United Kingdom, France, Japan and the Philippines will cooperate to create five flower gardens with international elements. Ten well-known domestic landscape enterprises will build a flower landscape and all of the districts and new area in Shenzhen will also bring their works to the show.

Apart from the flower exhibition, the event will also present a string of flower-related cultural activities, including a plant-made costume show for children, a photo competition, video sharing activities on Douyin, a popular social network for short videos, 18 outdoor performances, a live show on flower arrangement by floriculture masters, the Greater Bay Area floriculture competition and the Greater Bay Area forum on the building of a flower city.

On the opening day, the organizer will unveil a new type of crimson Chinese rose, which can bloom for a longer period of time and is capable of surviving diseases and resisting hot and cold temperatures. At present, channels are open for residents to name the flower. Residents can gain access through the Shenzhen Evening News’ WeChat account to participate.

Residents with a ticket for Fairy Lake Botanical Park can enter the show without paying an extra fee. Traffic around the area will be controlled, according to the organizer. For more information, residents can follow the WeChat account, mlszgzh or szbgac.
