SZ has 3rd most tycoons in China: Hurun

Shenzhen ranks third in China in terms of the number of billionaires with personal assets exceeding US$1 billion, following Beijing and Hong Kong, according to the latest annual rich list compiled and released by Hurun Institute.

Shenzhen is home to 67 billionaires with personal wealth of more than US$1 billion, while Hong Kong has 69 and Beijing has 103.

Shenzhen is followed by Shanghai (66), Taipei (35), Hangzhou (29) and Guangzhou (29) on the list, Chinese-language media reported yesterday.

According to the Hurun list, there are 658 billionaires in China, leading the global list. The United States and Germany follow with 584 and 117 billionaires, respectively.

Ma Huateng, founder and CEO of Shenzhen-based Internet giant Tencent, and Xu Jiayin, chairman of Shenzhen-headquartered Evergrande Group, are the second and third richest men in the country. Jack Ma, founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba, remains the richest Chinese person in the world with US$39 billion, according to the latest Hurun ranking.

Jack Ma is ranked 22, up four places from his 2018 ranking, on the global list that ranked 2,470 billionaires from 67 countries, according to the ranking.

Topping the ranking is American Jeff Bezos of Amazon, whose net worth is estimated at US$147 billion. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett of the United States stand in the second and third places with US$96 billion and US$88 billion, respectively.

The new Chinese entrants include Colin Huang Zheng of social e-commerce company Pinduoduo, “hotpot king” Zhang Yong and his wife Shu Ping, and Zhang Yiming of Beijing-based Internet technology company ByteDance.

The wealth was calculated as of Jan. 31, 2019.
