THE total number of social organizations in Shenzhen has seen substantial growth over the past decade, up from 3,355 in 2008 to 10,230 in 2018, statistics from the city’s first blue book of social organizations show.
The number of social organizations per 10,000 permanent residents increased from 3.52 in 2008 to 8.03 in 2018, placing Shenzhen in the leading position among China’s first-tier cities.
Compiled by the city’s social organization management bureau and China Global Philanthropy Institute, the book, which was published Thursday, reviews the management and development of social organizations in Shenzhen and presents the status quo of these organizations between 2017 and 2018.
According to the book, the activities launched by the city’s social organizations are mainly to supplement basic public services, provide social services, serve economic development and enrich residents’ cultural lives.
As of the end of 2018, the largest number of registered social organizations in Shenzhen fell under the category of education, accounting for 24.25 percent of the total.
The other major categories include social services, culture, sports, and industrial and commercial services.
The revenue of social organizations in Shenzhen has also increased rapidly. According to the annual work report on social organizations in 2017, the total revenue of the city’s social organizations increased from 21.33 billion yuan (US$3.19 billion) in 2016 to 25.1 billion yuan in 2017, up 17.72 percent year on year.
The expenditures of social organizations totaled 24.84 billion yuan in 2017. Revenue and expenditure was basically balanced on the whole, according to the report.
