Shenzhen has been voted as the fifth most attractive Chinese city for expats in 2018, according to the results released at the 17th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals (CIEP) yesterday.

Shenzhen’s ranking remained the same as last year. Shanghai, Beijing, Hefei and Hangzhou took the first four places.

The other five cities in the top 10 include Suzhou, Qingdao, Tianjin, Xi’an and Wuhan.

It is noteworthy that Shanghai has been crowned the most attractive Chinese city for expats for the seventh consecutive year.

The campaign collected a total of 4,054 votes from expat professionals and 94,849 online votes from foreign residents.

A special panel of judges consisting of award-winning foreign experts was also set up for the selection. The panel included Nobel laureates Konstantin Novoselov, Arieh Warshel, Edvard Moser and Michael Young, and Turing Award winner Les Valiant.

The rankings were announced by Zhang Jianguo, vice minister of science and technology, at the Shenzhen Forum for the 17th CIEP.

In addition to the most attractive Chinese cities for expats, Zhang also announced the 10 Chinese cities with the most potential to lure foreign talents at the forum.

The 10 cities are Xiamen, Nanjing, Urumqi, Guangzhou, Xuzhou, Haikou, Kunming, Jinan, Dalian and Chengdu.

The selection campaign has been co-conducted by the China Society for Research on International Professional Personnel Exchange and Development and International Talent magazine since 2010.
