The 2019 Shenzhen Design Week officially opened at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning on Friday, presenting a total of 49 design-related activities across the city until the end of the month.

Key activities include the awards ceremony of the Shenzhen Global Design Award, the exhibition of excellent works, the guest city exhibition “Meet London Design,” Shenzhen Design Expo, Creative Cities Network Exhibition, a themed exhibition titled “Face to Face between Art and Design, between France and China,” Design Exhibition of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a keynote forum and a design forum, as well as an array of satellite events.

The two main venues are the Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning and Hall 6 of the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian District.

“Shenzhen Design Week has been successfully held for two years, receiving a positive response and the support of designers from home and abroad, and has become one of the city’s new cultural brands,” said Li Xiaogan, head of the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, at the opening ceremony.

The aim is that through five to 10 years’ efforts, Shenzhen Design Week will become a word-class design event with distinctive features, further strengthening exchanges in the global design community, according to Li.

Peter Murray, a design advocate of the London mayor, also attended the opening ceremony. “London is a historical city and Shenzhen is a modern metropolis. We need cultural diversity and cultural exchanges to support good design and sustainable urban development. I believe the two cities can learn much from each other,” said Murray.

London has served as the guest of honor at this year’s design week. The guest city exhibition, which will end today, was staged in Hall 6 of Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center on Friday afternoon.

The design week’s opening ceremony also witnessed the establishment of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Creative Design Alliance, which aims to become another high-quality platform for promoting innovation culture in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Shenzhen Design Week, first held in 2017, is an annual design event sponsored by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, directed by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Office and organized by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Association.
