Longer and more intense rainfall will affect the city in June than was seen in May, according to the forecast of Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory.
The observatory estimates 350-400 millimeters of rainfall is expected in the city in June, the month of dragon boat rain.
Dragon boat rain refers to intensive rainfall that is brought on by summer monsoons and affects the city in the weeks around the Dragon Boat Festival.
Hourly rainfall reaching 100 millimeters is most likely to occur. Daily rainfall is expected to exceed 300 millimeters in the city.
The city entered the dragon boat rain season May 20, during which three rounds of rainfall affected the city and forced the observatory to issue red alerts three times in one week, between May 20 and 27, which was the first such occasion in the past decade.
In the three rounds of rainfall in recent weeks, the hourly amount reached 100 millimeters. The hourly rainfall in Guangming on May 23 reached 136.5 millimeters, setting a new hourly rainfall record in the city.
The observatory reminded schools citywide to halt classes even if only a regional red alert is issued.
The observatory also reminded residents to stay away from rivers and slopes that may pose a threat during the flood season and to stay up to date on weather information through various channels.
