Three artists hold exhibitions at OCAT Shenzhen| Until Aug. 18

Three Chinese artists, Wang Changcun, Zhu Changquan and Cheng Xinhao, are holding their solo exhibitions at OCAT Shenzhen, featuring contemporary sound art and video art. Entry is free.
Zhu’s “History of an Action” exhibition is surrounded by Wang’s “The Sensation of Logic” exhibition in Hall A. He uses video art as his primary language of expression to analyze everyday life.
According to curator Tao Hanchen, Zhu’s “Blow-up” (2014) is based on the artist’s innermost fear, for which Zhu sets a multi-dimensional narrative structure: Fear dictates people’s behavior, life and personality. “The fear can also be provoked and blown up at a point in time or by an incident and then brings one into a state of madness,” Tao wrote in the exhibition profile.
Since 2015, Zhu furthered his experiments in video art by collaging and editing a large number of video clips that are related to everyday life.

Wang’s “The Sensation of Logic” exhibition presents more than a dozen works spanning from experimental music, sound installation, interactive video installation and digital images Wang has produced since 2009.
“The title of the exhibition draws its inspiration from the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s book, ‘Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation.’ Logic can be explained, while sensation may not be defined. Therefore, ‘The Sensation of Logic’ is open-ended,” curator Lu Leiping wrote.

In Hall B, Cheng is showcasing his “The Fool’s Gold” exhibition, with several video screens on the walls and a mountain-like installation winding in the center of the hall for visitors to sit or climb on.

The exhibition continues the artist’s subjects since 2013 which center on two marginal groups: the Mang People, an ethnic minority group living along China’s border with Vietnam, and the workers in Longhua District in Shenzhen.
A doctor of chemistry who has won the Shiseido Photography Award, Cheng has been following these groups for a long time and uses multi-regional, multi-disciplinary and multimedia artistic methods to discuss ever-expanding system of global capital.
Curator Chen Baiqi designed the mountain-like installation in an attempt to link the imagery of the exhibition with the issue it is discussing. The issue is about how a minority group on China’s frontier has been pulled into the system of global capital, and about how the expansion of this system has inevitably produced relationships between Yunnan and Shenzhen, an inland province and a coastal economic zone.
