A demonstration class event for the 2019 Nanshan Foreign Teachers’ Teaching Talent Competition came to an end at Keyuan Primary School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School on Thursday.

Officials from the municipal and Nanshan education bureaus attended the event as judges. The event also marked the end of the monthlong 2019 Nanshan District Foreign Teachers’ Teaching Competition.

A total of 10 first prizes, and several second prizes, third prizes and outstanding organization prizes, were given to the expatriate teachers and the schools they were representing.

The judges gave high praise to the teaching of Thomas Bogues, an expatriate teacher at Keyuan Primary School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School, and Samuel Peter Grew from Liwan Primary School of Nanshan Experimental Education Group. The demonstration class event enriched the format of the teaching talent competition, according to the organizers.

Huang Juying, a researcher in the Policy and Regulation Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, was in attendance and made a speech. She recalled the process of first bringing the foreign teachers project to Shenzhen. She also gave high praise for and placed great hope in the management of expatriate teachers in Nanshan.

Hong Qihua, supervisor of the Nanshan District Education Bureau, expressed his hopes for the future of expatriate teachers in Nanshan District. “Nanshan District should encourage expatriate teachers to bring their excellent cultures, advanced education concepts and characteristic teaching methods from their home countries to Nanshan. Foreign teachers can explore classroom practice innovation and interactive communication, while standardizing classroom teaching and improving the quality of teaching. We will work together to bring Nanshan education into a new era of internationalization,” said Hong.

Nanshan District has the largest enclaves of expats and the only experimental area for education internationalization in Shenzhen. The internationalization of education in Nanshan has developed vigorously, and a large and growing team of international education talents has been formed in the district.

Expatriate teachers are playing an increasingly important role in the internationalization of education in Nanshan as well as the exchange of Chinese and foreign cultures, according to Hong.

In the 2018-2019 school year, the primary schools and secondary schools in Nanshan District hired 243 expatriate teachers in total, and the public schools realized full coverage of foreign teachers.

In particular, Yucai No. 4 Primary School, SUSTech No. 1 Primary School, SUSTech No. 2 Primary School and Gangwan Primary School employed expatriate vice presidents.
