Please Note

Nine French-language movies will be shown at Broadway’s three cinemas in Shenzhen this week. The movies for the Panorama of French Cinema event were all made in recent years.


‘By the Grace of God’ (2019)



Three men who were childhood friends will compare their personal experiences and question their lives. “By the Grace of God” is a French-Belgian drama directed by Francois Ozon. It won the Jury Grand Prix at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival.

‘White as Snow’ (2019)



French director Anne Fontaine grafts a feminist tale about a young woman’s sexual awakening onto the classic legend of Snow White, with muddled results.

‘Zombillenium’ (2017)



Zombillenium, a Halloween theme park, happens to be the one place on Earth where real monsters can hide in plain sight. When Hector, a human, threatens to disclose the true identity of his employees, the Vampire Park manager has no other choice but to hire him. To find his daughter, Hector must escape from his zombie and werewolf coworkers. “Zombillenium” is a French-Belgian animated film directed by Arthur de Pins and Alexis Ducord.

‘Sink or Swim’ (2018)



A depressed man joins a synchronized swimming team made up of middle-aged men. “Sink or Swim” is a French comedy directed by Gilles Lellouche.

‘At War’ (2018)



After promising 1,100 employees that they would protect their jobs, the managers of a factory decide to suddenly close up shop. Laurent leads a fight against this decision. “At War” is a French drama directed by Stephane Brize. It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

‘Remi sans Famille’ (2018)



Directed by Antoine Blossier, “Remi sans Famille” is based Hector Malot’s novel “Sans Famille.” Remi is a boy in an orphanage. He meets street performer Vitalis who discovers Remi’s talent for singing and offers to help the boy escape the orphanage.

‘Return of the Hero’ (2018)



In 1809, France, Captain Neuville is called to the front, leaving his future bride heartbroken. Her sister decides to write letters on his behalf to cheer her up. But it all goes south when Neuville reappears. “Return of the Hero” is a French-Belgian film directed by Laurent Tirard.

‘Lady J’ (2018)



“Lady J” is a French period drama directed by Emmanuel Mouret and inspired by a story in Denis Diderot’s novel “Jacques the Fatalist.” The film stars Cecile de France as Madame de la Pommeraye, a woman who is spurned by her lover, the Marquis des Arcis, and enacts a complex revenge plot with the help of the titular Mademoiselle de Joncquieres.

‘Varda by Agnès’ (2019)



An unpredictable documentary from a fascinating storyteller, Agnès Varda’s new feature documentary sheds light on her experience as a director, bringing her personal insight to what she calls “cine-writing.”
