“Romeo et Juliette,” a French musical based on William Shakespeare’s play, is being shown in Shenzhen this week.

A scene from “Romeo et Juliette.”

With music and lyrics by Gerard Presgurvic, the musical premiered in Paris in 2001. The production was directed and choreographed by Redha Benteifour, with costumes by Dominique Borg and sets by Petrika Ionesco.

Since 2001, the musical has entertained audiences throughout Europe and Asia and has been translated into several languages, including Italian, Hungarian, Russian, English, German, Spanish, Romanian, Japanese and Korean. The Shenzhen shows are in French with Chinese subtitles.

The story is told in a light way to allow modern audience members to understand the classic. To express the hatred between the two families, the costumes and lighting are designed mainly in two powerful colors: The Montague’s are seen in shades of blue and the Capulet’s in red. The musical debuted in Shenzhen last year, when audience members were stunned by its dazzling setting and catchy music. Composer Presgurvic added electronic, dance, rock and other elements of modern music to it.
