Motorists driving at speeds below 60 kilometers per hour on Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway will be punished starting today, following a 10-day grace period.

The drivers will be fined 500 yuan (US$72.69) and have three penalty points added to their driver’s license, according to the rule.

Driving at low speeds could cause traffic accidents and congestion, especially on the expressways where traffic conditions are good. Shenzhen traffic police have installed a set of cameras, which are the first of their kind in Shenzhen, on the expressway to capture slow-driving violations. According to Mu Sanying, deputy unit chief with the traffic police’s Western Expressway Brigade, the traffic conditions on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway are good, with light traffic. The speed of vehicles is generally fast, so slow vehicles will disrupt the traffic flow and cause hazards. Some accidents related to slow driving have been reported.

The speed restriction will be applied to northbound vehicles running on the Xixiang-Fuyong section of the expressway.
