Cooperation established to build research institute

Bao'an District, Ocean University of China (OUC) and Shenzhen Yantian Port Group Co. Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement to set up an OUC, Shenzhen research institute at a ceremony held Monday at Wuzhou Guest House in Futian District.

At the same time, Huawei and OUC inked a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly build an intelligent ocean data center under the OUC, Shenzhen research institute.

The signing ceremony showed that the construction of the Shenzhen research institute is now under way.

In addition to the intelligent ocean data center, the OUC, Shenzhen research institute will also establish a “blue think tank” and three laboratories, namely a living marine resources lab, marine high-end equipment lab and marine ecological environment lab.

Mai Kangsen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, will be the president of the Shenzhen research institute in charge of building the living marine resources lab.

With the support of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the three sides will make full use of the educational advantages of OUC, superior location of Shenzhen and innovation strength of Shenzhen’s enterprises to pursue comprehensive development and to support key national initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

It has also been said that the institute will support Shenzhen in becoming a global ocean center city, attract and cultivate a group of high-quality talents in the ocean industry, and build key science and technology innovation platforms to make innovative achievements that will satisfy key national and local strategic demands and have huge market potential.

The institute will also help develop the marine economy and other strategic and emerging industries and assist Shenzhen in participating in global ocean governance and building a pilot demonstration area for socialism with Chinese characteristics.
