SZ to add more hospital beds

Shenzhen will have more than two new 3A-grade hospitals, the highest of China’s three-tier grading system for public hospitals, and add 8,000 hospital beds in 2020, the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission said at its annual work conference yesterday.

According to the city’s health authority, Shenzhen will endeavor to make possible the use of Hong Kong-registered drugs and medical equipment in specific areas and medical institutions this year.

The city will also improve the policies and measures for health-care service providers from Hong Kong and Macao as well as overseas medical talents to conduct medical practice in Shenzhen, and support social forces to set up high-end and international hospitals.

To expand medical services, Shenzhen will accelerate the construction and expansion of hospitals. It will start the construction of Shenzhen No. 3 Children’s Hospital, Shenshan People’s Hospital and Phase II of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital and the Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shenzhen Center, respectively.

The expansion of the Fuqiang unit of Shenzhen Maternity & Child Health-care Hospital will be completed this year, the health authority said.

Shenzhen plans to recruit more than 3,000 licensed doctors this year and pilot the reform of general practitioner training and talent incentives.

For the existing medical talents, the city will launch the first training project for hospital directors and middle-level professionals and a series of other talent cultivation projects, in order to provide better career development opportunities for doctors in Shenzhen.

According to official statistics, the Shenzhen government’s health expenditure grew by 19.2 percent to reach 33.55 billion yuan (US$4.89 billion) in 2019.

Last year, the city supplied 3,767 new hospital beds and recruited 3,994 doctors. Four new 3A-grade hospitals were built and the total number of 3A-grade hospitals in Shenzhen reached 46.

On the grass-roots level, Shenzhen has built two community hospitals and 49 new community health institutions and recruited 577 general practitioners. The total number of general practitioners reached 4,059, with 3.12 general practitioners per 10,000 people in 2019.

Last year, Shenzhen also introduced 20 high-level medical teams through its Sanming Project, which encourages outside medical resources to provide excellent medical services in the city.
