A transport hub the size of 17 regular Metro stations is under construction at Universiade New Town in Longgang District and will be completed in 2022, according to a report by Southern Metropolis Daily on Wednesday.

With a floor area of 160,000 square meters, the Universiade Transport Hub will integrate three Metro lines — Line 3, 14 and 16 — and intercity rail Line 33, an 86-kilometer rail running between the Shenzhen airport and Daya Bay in Huizhou City.

The only transport hub in the city’s east where four lines meet will enhance the connectivity of the eastern area of Shenzhen with Futian CBD and Shenzhen International Airport in Bao’an in the west, as well as Daya Bay.

“The transport hub will offer a seamless connection of the Metro, intercity rail, a taxi station and slow traffic system. It has also reserved space for onsite businesses,” Dai Yong, the project manager for the transport hub of Shenzhen Metro Construction Group, said.

So far, the fence, beam and pillar engineering of the transport hub has been completed and the main structure will be completed before the end of the year, according to Li Yanjun, engineer of the project contractor, China Railway Group.

Metro Line 3 has already been put into service while work on lines 14 and 16 has started. The two new lines will be operational in 2022.

The planned 151-kilometer Line 33 will start from Zhongshan Station in the city of Zhongshan and end in the city of Huizhou, going through Shenzhen running east and west.

The Shenzhen section will start from Terminal 4 of the Shenzhen airport and end at Kengzi Station in Pingshan District. Work on the Shenzhen-Daya Bay intercity rail will start before the end of the year.
