Two Shenzhen educators were conferred the title of Education Reform Pioneers at a meeting held by the city government Thursday to commend role models in the cause of education to mark China’s 36th Teachers’ Day.

The recipients are Li Qing-quan, who has been president of Shenzhen University since 2012, and Liu Genping, who has been director of the Nanshan District Education Bureau since 2013.

They are among 635 teachers commended at the meeting, who received awards from Shenzhen Mayor Chen Rugui.

The Top 10 Schoolmasters title was awarded to Sun Yong, president of Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology, and nine principals from one kindergarten, three primary schools, and five junior and senior high schools.

Another 10 teachers were awarded the Top 10 Young Teachers title.

A total of 57 education units, including university offices, lab centers, schools and kindergartens, were also awarded.

The meeting affirmed Shenzhen’s remarkable achievements in the development of education and the remarkable contributions made by teachers and educators.

The city will endeavor to make teaching the most esteemed and admired profession in society and to cultivate a group of brilliant education workers, according to the meeting.

Efforts are also urged to implement preventative measures on campuses to ensure the safety of students and to build a sound environment to further develop the city’s education cause.

Also Thursday, the city’s leadership extended greetings to all teachers in Shenzhen in a letter.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal study of students, the virtual world came to the rescue. After the initial outbreak, the city’s 2.3 million stay-at-home students were able to continue schooling thanks to teachers resorting to online classes, the letter said.

Shenzhen’s rapid ascent over the past 40 years is inseparable from the unremitting efforts by hardworking teachers, it added.

In order to celebrate the occasion, districts across the city held activities ahead of Teachers’ Day.

Nanshan District awarded 28 classroom teachers who have been on the job for more than 30 years and worked in Nanshan for more than 25 years.

In Futian, 3,648 education workers were awarded.

A light show was exhibited at the Civic Center Square in Futian CBD on Thursday night to celebrate Teachers’ Day.

Shenzhen has 219,000 teaching and administrative staff, according to official statistics.
