Shenzhen will start construction of 240 kilometers of ecological pathways this year, according to an overall construction plan (2020-2035) that has been approved at the executive meetings of the Shenzhen Municipal Government and CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee recently.

According to the construction plan released by the Shenzhen Municipal Water Authority recently, the city will form an ecological pathway network along rivers and around lakes in different areas through phased implementations.

The network is comprised of a belt that links lakes, reservoirs and rivers, two ecological ways along the bays in eastern and western Shenzhen, four paths that link urban areas and mountains and eight ecological corridors that go through the metropolis.

Based around the estuaries of the Guanlan, Maozhou, Dasha, Longgang, Pingshan and Shenzhen rivers, the city will complete construction of 600 kilometers of ecological pathways by 2022 and at least 1,000 kilometers by 2025, according to the plan.

The city will complete the upgrading of 1,000 kilometers of ecological pathways by 2030 and will complete construction of the ecological pathway network that covers all river estuaries by 2035.

Through the construction of the ecological pathway network, the city will set an example in comprehensive river treatment, industrial development and urban development. It will be a system for river and sea safety, an ecological system for ecology and green development, a public leisure system, a system of diversified cultures and an industrial system integrating rivers and the city.

As part of the agenda of the Guangdong Provincial Government, the province will complete 5,200 kilometers of ecological pathways by the end of 2022. The length will reach 7,800 kilometers by 2025. In 2030, a network of 16,000 kilometers will cover the province.

The construction of ecological pathways in Guangdong Province will be created around the wetlands, estuaries, bays and mouths of the Dongjiang, Xijiang and Hanjiang rivers.
