Work on five new Shenzhen Metro line sections started yesterday. Upon their completion in 2025, Shenzhen will boast a network of 16 Metro lines with a total length of 647 kilometers, which will enable riders to reach other Pearl River Delta cities within one hour.

A launch ceremony was held at the Apollo Station on Phase II of Metro Line 16 in Longgang District yesterday morning.

The five sections are Phase II of Line 6 spur line, Phase II of Line 7, Phase II of Line 12, Line 13 southern extension and Phase II of Line 16.

Phase II of Line 6 spur line operates in Guangming District, running through Guangming CBD and Fenghuangcheng area to Guangmingcheng Station. The 4.94-kilometer line will interchange with Lines 13 and 18, Dongguan-Shenzhen intercity railway, Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link and Ganzhou-Shenzhen high-speed rail. It will facilitate the integrated development of Shenzhen and Dongguan.

The 2.67-kilometer Phase II of Line 7 runs in Nanshan District, linking Xili with Shenzhen University General Hospital.

Phase II of Line 12 is located in Bao’an District. The 8.05-kilometer line will serve as the backbone for traffic in Shajing and Songgang areas.

The southern extension of Line 13 starts from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and goes to the Dongjiaotou area in Nanshan District. The 3.82-kilometer line will link the Shekou area with the rest of Nanshan as well as Bao’an and Guangming districts.

Phase II of Line 16 extends 9.46 kilometers in Longgang District, which will enhance connectivity between Longgang CBD and Yuanshan area.

In the coming years, Shenzhen will construct at least 200 kilometers of Metro lines a year, according to Xin Jie, chairman with Shenzhen Metro Group, in an interview in September.

In 2021, Phase I of Line 20 is slated to be put into operation, linking the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport with the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center in Bao’an District.

In 2023, the city will open 149 kilometers of new Metro lines. Its total length of line in the Metro network will reach 647 kilometers by 2025 and 1,335 kilometers by 2035.

According to Xin, Shenzhen will boast a 1,000-kilometer Metro rail network connecting with 1,000-kilometer high-speed railways and intercity rails by 2030.
