“It completely turned a deep-rooted idea of mine on its head that one should go to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou for treating critical illnesses,” said a patient surnamed Zhang from Beijing when talking about the medical level and services of Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital.

In November 2020, Zhang, a 64-year-old Beijing native, was in agony by a worsening liver disease. Not sure if he could ever be cured, Zhang flew from Beijing to Shenzhen on the recommendation of his friends. He came to Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital, the only hospital that is qualified to perform liver and kidney transplants in Shenzhen.

Because Zhang was in critical condition, he was lucky enough to be matched with a liver donor a few days later and had a liver transplant in Shenzhen. A month later, Zhang was discharged from the hospital.

Liu Lei, Party chief and president of the Shenzhen No. 3 People’s Hospital, said that the number of nonlocal patients who choose to come to the hospital and see doctors for serious illnesses has increased year by year.

There has been a rapid improvement of medical quality in Shenzhen as the government has continued to pour investment into the medical sector, Liu told the Daily Sunshine.

In recent years, the hospital has brought in a large number of the country’s top experts in various medical specialties, including experts from the Beijing 302 Hospital, Beijing 309 Hospital and Xijing Hospital.

“They have brought advanced diagnosis and treatment methods and their rich experience to Shenzhen,” Liu said.

In addition to the introduction of famous doctors, the hospital also spared no effort in acquiring advanced equipment. At present, the hospital has set up a liver disease institute, a BSL-3 laboratory and a SPF (specific pathogen-free) animal lab, which is the only one in the city.

The hospital also has the first top hybrid operating room in Shenzhen equipped with the fourth-generation Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system and the first intelligent comprehensive laboratory in China.

Liu disclosed that in the future, the hospital will strive to become a top research-oriented hospital that integrates medical treatment, scientific research, teaching and preventive health services. The hospital will also carry out exchanges and cooperation with its international counterparts in the field of disease prevention and control.
