Hong Kong students Kiara Kuo and Cheung Ka-man who have taken up internships in Qianhai said they wanted to pursue their career development in Shenzhen after finishing their college studies.

Kuo and Cheung have become interns at the Shenzhen company JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms, through an employment program that the Qianhai Authority has initiated for young people from Hong Kong and Macao.

“A fellow student learned about the recruitment program on the official website of the Qianhai Authority and referred it to me,” said Kuo, a student at the Guangzhou-based Jinan University. “I’ve been interested in working for an Internet company, so I’m happy to land an internship at JD.com through the program.”

Kuo said she has been involved in various fields such as data analysis and user operation at JD.com. “Though challenging, the experience can temper my willpower. I wish to become an official employee of the company after graduation,” she said.

Cheung also expressed her willingness to work in Shenzhen after she graduates from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom.

Majoring in cultural industry management at the British university, Cheung said it is more likely for her find an ideal job in the cultural industry in Shenzhen, where a number of new cultural infrastructures are under construction.

“Back in Hong Kong, there are more job opportunities in finance than in the cultural industry,” she said, adding that Shenzhen is an ideal place for her career development.

Kuo and Cheung are among dozens of young people from Hong Kong and Macao doing internships in Qianhai through the employment program. As of March, a total of 292 job and internship vacancies in Qianhai have been offered to Hong Kong/Macao youths.
