Guangdong Province has commissioned Shenzhen to advance the construction of a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, and to push forward the comprehensive pilot reform this year.

The tasks were made clear in a provincial government work report delivered at the annual session of the provincial legislature that opened in Guangzhou on Thursday.

Shenzhen will also undertake other missions, including scientific innovation, key infrastructure construction and business environment improvement, according to the report delivered by acting Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong.

Construction will be sped up on the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone and Xili Lake International Science and Education City.

The provincial government will support Shenzhen to become a national pilot city for sports consumption.

In addition, Shenzhen is urged to expand new cooperation opportunities with Hong Kong by utilizing the Hong Kong government’s strategy to build a new metropolitan zone at an area in its northern part.

To further promote Qianhai’s modern service industry’s innovative development, the report also proposes to build platforms such as the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Financial City and Qianhai International Talent Hub, and promote the construction of an international legal service center and international commercial dispute resolution center.

In terms of scientific and technological innovation, Shenzhen is entrusted to accelerate the construction of Pengcheng Lab and Guangming Science City.

Guangdong will also support the city to build Shenzhen Technology Trade Service Center and promote AI innovation applications.

Guangdong recorded 8 percent GDP growth in 2021 to 12.1 trillion yuan (US$1.95 trillion), according to the work report.

Dongguan has become the fourth city in Guangdong with economic aggregates exceeding 1 trillion yuan, following Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan.

The province’s foreign trade surpassed 8 trillion yuan last year, up by 16.7 percent year on year, according to the report.

Guangdong, China’s manufacturing heartland and leading foreign trade player, has strengthened its science and technology strategy, and reinforced the foundation of high-quality economic development, according to the government report.

Guangdong is targeting an economic growth of about 5.5 percent this year, Wang said.

Meanwhile, the province has built a total of 170,000 5G base stations, ranking first in China, with 46,700 5G base stations set up in 2021 alone, according to the report.
