A lively spirit filled two local universities over the weekend as freshmen from across the country arrived at campus to embark on their life’s new journeys.

Shenzhen MSU-BIT University (SMBU) welcomed 581 freshmen from 21 province-level regions to its Longgang campus Saturday. The figure is an increase of 31% from last year’s total number of admissions.

The freshmen will start a Russian language training program lasting for a month. SMBU continued a one-stop registration process this year to facilitate students.

“Our enrollment is going pretty well this year as the school has become better recognized by society. Over 7,000 students took the SMBU ability test this year,” said Li Hezhang, rector of SMBU.

“We opened two new majors this year — chemistry and the Chinese language. The Chinese language is for international students from Russian-speaking countries. At present, more than 100 international students applied for the Chinese language program at SMBU,” Li added.

SMBU also held an event Saturday night to introduce the school’s comprehensive situations to the new students and their parents.

On the same day, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) welcomed over 400 freshmen to its Longgang campus.

The second batch of freshmen and new postgraduate students will arrive Aug. 29 and 30, according to the university.

So far this year, CUHK-Shenzhen has enrolled a total of 1,312 freshmen from the Chinese mainland. More are expected to be enrolled from Shanghai after the COVID-delayed National College Entrance Examinations there.

CUHK-Shenzhen will hold a ceremony Sept. 3 as scheduled, marking the beginning of the new semester.
