Shenzhen Reading Month

The Shenzhen Reading Month is a general public reading event initiated in 2000 by the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. It is held annually from November 1 to 30, and 2022 marks the 22nd Shenzhen Reading Month. Organized by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and hosted by the Shenzhen Publishing Group in association with over 30organizations including related administrative organs, media, enterprises and public institutions in Shenzhen, the event includes hundreds of reading and cultural activities around different themes every year. It adheres to the goal of creating a society of reading and realizing the cultural rights of the citizens. With the theme of "Reading, Progress, Fulfillment", it focuses on improving the literacy of citizens and building a learning-oriented city.

Over the past 22 years, the Shenzhen Reading Month has held 9,000 cultural activities, attracted 180 million participants, donated books worth over RMB30 million to Project Hope schools and libraries for Shenzhen young migrant workers, invited more than 200 experts and scholars, created brand activities including the Shenzhen Reading Forum, the Shenzhen Book Fair, the Classic Poetry Recital, selections of the Top 10 Books of the Year and the Top 10 Children's Books of the Year, the Sleepless Night Reading, the Book Donations, Reading Along with Celebrities, and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Middle School Students Essay Contest.

After years of development, the reading month has become one of the 10 cultural name cards for Shenzhen and an important platform for realizing the cultural rights of the citizens. Meanwhile, it has become a benchmark for promoting reading among the public in China and has gained wide attention from society.

At the 10th and 20th anniversaries of the Shenzhen Reading Month, the related State ministries and commissions held national exchange meetings on reading of the general public in Shenzhen and commended the Shenzhen Reading Month as an excellent project of public reading in the country, which further highlighted the Shenzhen Sample of public reading in China.
