Founded in 2007, "Weekend Theater" is sponsored by Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, and funded by Shenzhen Special Fund for the Development of Publicity and Cultural Undertakings and organized by the Municipal Cultural Center. It is an important cultural initiative to serve tens of millions of Shenzhen citizens and also one of important brand activities of Shenzhen Cultural Center. It is held every Friday at 8 p.m. in the film theater, and a total of 52 public welfare performances are held every year. The activities support and promote the development of folk art associations, guide the general public to enter the theater, enjoy a variety of cultural activities, cultivate the city's cultural market, and realize the cultural rights of citizens. Since 2020, it has innovated the online performance mode and launched "cloud performances" for citizens through online live broadcasts, breaking the geographical restrictions of activities and expanding the scope of spectators, with an average of nearly 50,000 viewers per performance, and some special performances have been listed on platforms such as "Guangdong Part of Learning Power" and "National Public Culture Cloud". While providing wonderful performances, it has also played an important role in cultivating folk art groups and enhancing cultural and artistic exchanges, and has now become a resounding brand of cultural performances in Shenzhen.
