Founded in 1946, Shenzhen People's Hospital was formerly the Bao'an County Health Center. It was renamed Bao'an County People's Hospital after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. It was the only hospital back then that offered inpatient services in Shenzhen, so local Cantonese-speaking residents called it "Liuyibu" (meaning "inpatient care unit" in Cantonese). To this day, this colloquial term is widely used among Shenzheners. After the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, it was renamed Shenzhen People's Hospital. In 1994, the hospital was recognized as the first AAA-rated hospital in Shenzhen. In 1996, it was approved by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office to be the second hospital affiliated to Guangzhou-based Jinan University. In 2005, it was endorsed further as the Second Clinical Medical College of Jinan University. In 2018, with the endorsement from the Shenzhen city government, the hospital became the First Hospital Affiliated to the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Shenzhen People's Hospital is now one of the largest comprehensive hospitals in the city, offering comprehensive medical services.
