Industries of the future

In order to give full play to the advantages of an innovation-driven supply chain and ecosystem, to cultivate and develop industries of the future, enhance the momentum of development, and promote construction of a future-oriented modern industrial system, the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Commission, Shenzhen Municipal Development and Reform Commission, and the Shenzhen Municipal Industry and Information Technology Bureau have issued the "Shenzhen Action Plan for Cultivating and Developing Industries of the Future (2022-2025)."

Development status:

Industries of the future are a transformative force leading economic and social development, with significant first-mover advantages. Shenzhen has a solid foundation for industrial development, and its industrial chain is relatively complete. Four industries of the future – synthetic biology, blockchain, cell and gene, and aerospace technology – are now in the expansion stage, and have begun to take shape. They are expected to achieve exponential growth in five to 10 years. Another four industries of the future – brain science and brain-like intelligence, deep earth and deep sea, visible light communication and optical computing, and quantum information – are in the gestation period and are currently small in scale. They are expected to become the backbone of strategic emerging industries within 10-15 years.

Objectives:

(1) The organization of industries will continue to develop. Synthetic biology, blockchain, cell and gene, and aerospace technology industries will witness explosive growth. Brain science and brain-like intelligence, deep sea, visible light communication and optical computing, and quantum information industries will form technological R&D advantages. The industrial development pattern of cascading growth and continuous development will effectively take shape.

(2) Industrial competition will be strengthened. The overall scale of industries will continue to expand, and a number of "specialized, special and new" enterprises will be fostered. The city will reap the benefits of breakthroughs in scientific research, expand a number of future technology application scenarios and iterative demonstration projects, and establish several strategic emerging industrial clusters.

(3) Industrial space will be continuously optimized. With Guangming Science City, Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone, Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, Xili Lake International Science and Education City, Shenzhen International Bio-Valley in east Shenzhen, Hongling emerging financial and industrial belt, and Shenzhen High-Tech Park as the core take-in areas, Shenzhen will lay out public technology service platforms, technology innovation centers, and manufacturing innovation centers to gather a number of technology-based enterprises.

(4)The industrial ecosystem will be continuously improved. In combination with the demands of industrial development, Shenzhen will build some major scientific and technological infrastructure and scientific research institutions. A full-chain industrial service system of small and medium-sized test platforms, incubators, accelerators, and industrial parks will also be established. An industrial ecosystem of basic research, technological innovation, application expansion, industrial agglomeration, talent gathering, and financial support will be formed.
