Shenzhen, an international consumption center in the making

From: Shenzhen Municipal Talent Affairs Bureau

Shenzhen's early-day commerce rose from Zhongying Street and Dongmen Old Street in the east of the city. The Friendship Shopping Mall was known as the most famous commercial center of Luohu in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the Huaqiangbei commercial circle was hailed as the "No. 1 electronics street in China." Afterwards, 2,000 shopping centers emerged one after another, blossoming across the city.

Shenzhen currently has 272 shopping centers each with a floor area of more than 5,000 square meters, and 132 shopping centers each with a floor area of more than 50,000 square meters. Among them, four shopping malls, including The MixC, were included in the top 50 shopping centers in China in terms of sales in 2021. On top of this, six of the leading 100 shopping center chains in China are headquartered in Shenzhen, seven of the top 100 supermarkets in China are Shenzhen brands, and 15 of the top 70 shopping centers in China have established a presence in Shenzhen. A number of characteristic commercial circles such as the Shuibei jewelry cluster and charming blocks such as OCT Harbor have also been added to the local landscape, transforming Shenzhen into a consumer paradise.
