UpperHills

This commercial complex hosts the first Muji Hotel in the world, the only Sony direct-sale store in Shenzhen, the third Galeries Lafayette department store in China, and the city’s first Mandarin Oriental hotel. UpperHills made clear its ambition of seizing the commercial market with a composite business when the project was first planned. However, compared to other malls and hotels around the city, Shenzhen people speak positively about its outdoor layout located on the top floor of the mall.

The town consists of more than 20 three- to four-story single buildings staggered together to form a village, and is connected to the two "urban green lungs" of Shenzhen — Lianhua Hill and Bijia Mountain — via sky bridges. Designed partly in homage to the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, warm colors such as red, orange and yellow dominate, presenting a stark contrast with the gray and white buildings, and making it easy to take unforgettable photos. Shenzhen Design Week, which ran from Dec. 25, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2022, chose UpperHills as its main exhibition venue for the first time.
