When visitors walk into Shenzhen Guangming Time Valley, a huge clock inspired by the world-famous painting "The Persistence of Memory" reminds them they are in the "Timepiece Capital of China."
To learn more about the timepiece industry, you have to turn your attention to China, and if any city symbolizes the success of the country’s capitalist reforms and opening-up, it is Shenzhen.
As early as 2002 when China decided to ugrade the timepiece industry to a high-tech sector, a production base was planned for Shenzhen. One year later, aeronautics-focused watch brand FIYTA sent some of its “space watches” aboard the Shenzhou V spacecraft to help them complete the first manned space mission in China’s history with the utmost precision. As a result, China became only the second country after Switzerland that can manufacture watches for use in space. Today, Guangming Time Valley boasts seven of the top 10 timepiece brands in China, with its retail sales of brand-name timepieces accounting for more than 70% of the country's total. Its output of watches accounts for 53% of the country’s total and 42% of all those produced around the world. Industrial agglomeration has proven a winning formula for the Shenzhen timepiece industry. Statistics show that more than 95% of the supporting parts related to the manufacture of timepieces in Shenzhen are produced locally, forming a complete industrial chain featuring R&D design, precision manufacturing, pilot testing, surface refinement treatment, and material modification.
It you head to Guangming Time Valley during the annual sales season, you have a good chance of leaving with a great bargain and a memento or investment to treasure.
