Ming: China will gain more intl. validation

“China will win more validation from the international society as long as it continues to build itself into a better country and contribute to the wellbeing of the entire world,” Ming Jinwei, a veteran journalist and writer, said at the Sub-forum of Innovative International Communication in the Age of New Media of the 2023 Forum on Building Up China’s Cultural Strength held yesterday at Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center in Bao’an District today. 

6月8日,首届文化强国建设高峰论坛“新媒体时代的国际传播创新”分论坛在深圳举行。在“精准传播•话语构建”主题沙龙上,微信公众号“明叔杂谈”负责人明金维表示,“任何一个大国在崛起过程中先崛起的是经济和硬实力,最后崛起的是软实力。只要我们做得好,我们一定能讲得好,未来只要把国家建设得好,把世界建设得更好,我们一定能够获得更多的认同和赞成。”

In his speech, Ming proposed three strategies that he believes will contribute to more effective storytelling in China’s international communication efforts. 

According to Ming, the first strategy, is that Chinese storytellers should speak directly to American enterprises and the country’s people instead of targeting only at Western media outlets and politicians. “These people are actually minority groups of the Western society,” he said.

在明金维看来,加强国际传播,应破除三种“迷思”。他表示,第一种“迷思”是只盯着西方的主流媒体、主流政客,然而他们是美西方社会的少数派。国际传播应该到广大乡村地区,和美国的企业、美国人民直接沟通、直接交流。

The second strategy Ming proposed is that China’s international communication efforts should also aim at emerging markets and developing countries as they represent most of the international society. “When it comes to international communication, many only think of the U.S. and other Western countries. It is true that these countries are large economies with a big influence. But in terms of both the number of countries and populations, they’re in the minority of the international society,” Ming said.

明金维表示,第二种“迷思”,是一讲到国际传播,就想到美西方核心国家。美国等西方国家现在经济体量大、影响力大,但是无论从国家数量还是人口数量来看,他们在全世界都是少数派。因此,国际传播应该面向更广大的新兴市场和发展中国家,他们才是国际社会真正的大多数。

The third strategy, according to Ming, is to involve all people and organizations, who’re friendly to China, to tell the stories of China. “We should stop thinking that international communication is only the media’s job,” Ming said. “Effective international communication should perform like a concerto. It needs the participation of not only media outlets, but also scholars and self-media professionals.”

明金维认为,第三种应该破除的“迷思”是认为国际传播只是媒体的事情。他表示,国际传播要有协奏曲,不仅要有媒体,要有专家学者,更要有自媒体的参与,要在全世界的舆论场中,打一场所有对华友好的人士一起参与的全面人民战争的舆论战。

Ming, who currently runs a WeChat account titled “Ming Shu Za Tan,” is also a specialist in internet public relations and corporate culture. He graduated from the English Department of Peking University in 2002 and worked as an international journalist for Xinhua News Agency for the next 12 years.
