Celebrate Dragon Boat Festival with music

Shenzhen Concert Hall has arranged for four online and offline concerts for fans during the Dragon Boat Festival break, featuring piano and Chinese music.

Starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, two concerts will be livestreamed at v.cctv.com and the WeChat Channel of Shenzhen Concert Hall. Thursday’s show will be a crossover concert by ruan players Xue Miao and Xu Yang in collaboration with pianist Qian Weixiang and percussionist Li Shang, who will perform “Reveries of Yunnan,” “Zhongnan Ancient Melodies” and other pieces written for the ruan, a Chinese plucked string instrument dating back almost two millennia.

Friday’s concert headlines Curtis-trained pianist Luo Wei, who will perform a colorful repertoire ranging from Mozart, Debussy, Issac Albéniz and BélaBartók to Mily Balakirev.

On Saturday afternoon, a free concert will be performed by pipa player Ji Yin, zheng players Huang Liying and Ye Minyi alongside their students. The program will feature familiar Chinese music pieces including “A Moonlit Night on the Spring River” and “Ambush on All Sides.”

On Saturday evening, Dutch pianist and composer Michiel Borstlap will perform a solo recital. Audience members will hear many of his compositions that merge the diverse styles of jazz, pop and classical with stunning improvisations. The program will include “Memory of Enchantment,” which won him a Thelonious Monk Award in the United States, “Velvet Blue Ballet,” and “Prelude in D Minor,” among others. The musician has been commissioned to compose “Avicenna,” the world’s first opera inspired by Arabian culture and written in Arabic.
