'The Peacock'

Chinese dancer and choreographer Yang Liping will bring her dance drama “The Peacock” this week. At age 65, Yang serves as the artistic director of the production and will make a special appearance in the dance.

Violin, piano

Chinese violinist Wang Xiaoming will collaborate with pianist Huang Yameng on Thursday night to play pieces by Brahms, Beethoven, Sarasate, Alard and Wieniawski. On Saturday, Wuhan Conservatory of Music piano professor Xu Hong will play Mozart’s piano sonatas and pieces by Liszt and Scriabin.

Dance, symphony

On Friday and Saturday, prepare to be swept away by a spectacle of vibrant dances and dazzling costumes, as the Song and Dance Troupe of Xi’an’s dance show “The Door” will transport you to the grandeur and elegance of ancient China. Inspired by “Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk,” a Tang Dynasty (618-907) painting created by Zhang Xuan, the dance is an extraordinary fusion of artistic mastery and cultural heritage. Meanwhile, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will present Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 3” and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 10” and pianist Dong Feifei will be soloist.

Piano, opera

Wuhan Conservatory of Music piano teacher Chen Shaozhen will play Schumann’s “Widmung” (transcribed by Liszt) and “Davidbundlertanze,” and Brahms’ “Piano Sonata No. 3” on Saturday night. Meanwhile, singers from Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theater will present a night of songs from operas by Gounod, Offenbach, Verdi, Puccini, Lehar, Mozart, Bizet, to name a few.

Quartet

A forgotten gem, Mahler’s “Piano Quartet” will be played by the In-Sync Piano Quartet. The Chinese quartet will also play Mozart’s “Piano Quartet in G Minor, K. 478” and Fauré’s “Piano Quartet No. 1, Op. 15.”
