Xue Yingjia
On July 29, pianist Xue Yingjia will perform a concert dedicated to Brahms, who was born 190 years ago. The program will include “Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118” and “Four Pieces for Piano, Op. 119,” the last two piano works by Brahms, as well as “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24,” meant as a birthday gift for Clara Schumann. Xue won the first prize in the Skryabin International Piano Competition (Paris) in 2004, and the only Grand Prize in the Yamaha International Piano Competition (Belgium) in 2005.

Ju Xiaofu
On July 30, young pianist Ju Xiaofu will perform a concert that features the works of various composers of distinctive styles. The program will include Janáček’s poignant piano sonata “From the Street,” Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue in E Minor,” Ravel’s “The Tomb of Couperin,” as well as works by Liszt and Shostakovich. Praised by late Austrian pianist and composer Joerg Demus as an extremely talented pianist with profoundness, Ju was trained at the Julliard School.

Lin Daye
On July 28, conducted by SZSO music director Lin Daye, the orchestra will perform Richard Strauss’ “Horn Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major” and his epic “Alpine Symphony.” The latter is a tone poem for large orchestra written by Strauss in 1915. One of the composer’s largest non-operatic works, the score calls for about 125 players and a typical performance usually lasts around 50 minutes. German hornist Samuel Seidenberg will be the soloist.
