Dance, drama screening

Shanghai Dance Theater’s signature dance drama “Crested Ibises” shows the elegance of the crested ibis, an endangered species, and calls for animal protection. Traditional Chinese dance gestures are used in upper body movements, while ballet and Western dance elements are featured in the footwork. On Saturday, British stage play lovers can watch a screening of “The Seagull” produced by National Theater Live. Emilia Clarke makes her West End debut in this 21st century retelling of Anton Chekhov’s tale of love and loneliness.

Dance, suona

Chinese dance “Menogga’s Garden,” directed by Tong Ruirui, blends the ancient myths of the Zhuang ethnic culture with a love story. With modern stage designs and dazzling costumes, the show gives full display to the vitality and love of life inherent in the Zhuang culture. Meanwhile, Chinese suona player Liu Wenwen, who now teaches at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, will play crossover music with a jazz band Sunday night.

“Only Blue and Green”

'Only Blue and Green’

“Only Blue and Green,” a graceful dance inspired by the well-known “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” painted by Wang Ximeng of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), will be staged in several shows this week. The dance brings the beauty and charm of the painting and Wang’s story to the audience after the dance creators consulted with experts from the Palace Museum and intangible cultural heritage inheritors.

Vivace Quartet

String quartet, organ, violin

The Vivace Quartet, consisting of four Chinese string musicians graduating from Central Conservatory of Music, will play tunes by Haydn, Ligeti and Beethoven on Saturday night. On the same night, Chinese organ musician Chang Xiaoting who graduated with a doctorate from the Royal Conservatory of Music will perform classical pieces by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as scores from movies such as “Harry Potter” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” On Sunday, Chinese violinist Liu Xiao will collaborate with pianist Yu Boyang to perform familiar pieces, such as Monti’s “Czardas,” Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen,” Saint-Saëns’ “Violin Sonata No. 1” and Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances.”
