Waste incineration plant turned into eco-park

Writer:   |  Editor: Zhang Chanwen  |  From: Xinhua  |  Updated: 2023-08-16

Shenzhen has been at the forefront of constructing energy eco-parks that surpass even the standards set by the European Union, and the Longgang Energy Ecological Park is one result of Shenzhen’s efforts in this regard. This garbage incineration facility in Longgang District, covering an area of roughly 540,000 square meters, processes 5,000 tons of domestic waste daily. It is currently the largest single-construction domestic waste incineration facility in China. Currently closed to the public, the park, hosting a science education base and catering services, will be opened to the public in the future.

Over recent years, Shenzhen has built several such eco-parks that are open to the public. These eco-parks have achieved full-scale residential waste incineration after meticulously sorting and categorizing the waste, and have become popular instagrammable tourist sites. This innovative approach has shattered conventional perceptions of waste incineration power plants. The practice has been recognized by the Central Government as one of the 46 reform initiatives of Shenzhen that is promoted nationwide.
