Tony Award-winning musical 'Titanic' to grace SZ

Writer: Yu Yuanfan  |  Editor: Zhang Chanwen  |  From: Shenzhen Daily  |  Updated: 2023-09-04

On April 15, 1912, a British passenger liner en route from Southampton, England to New York City, the United States sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage, causing the death of more than 1,500 of its around 2,200 passengers.

The tragedy, which still remains the deadliest peacetime sinking of an ocean liner after more a century, has inspired many artistic works. The most famous two include an Oscar-winning film and a Tony Award-winning musical, both named after the liner "Titanic".

This October, musical fans in Shenzhen will have the opportunity to enjoy Titanic the Musical, which has won such praises as “an absolutely thrilling production” by The Stage, “the best piece of musical staging you will find in London” by The Guardian and “prime goose-bump territory” by The Telegraph, at the Pingshan Theater in Pingshan District.

The Shenzhen stop will be the musical’s only stop in South China during its 10th anniversary tour. The musical will be in English with Chinese subtitles.

As a homage to the legendary ship, Titanic the Musical portraits the last days of 126 characters, all of whom are based on real people aboard the ship. While the characters’ destinies are foreseeable from the very beginning, their respective stories will still grip the audiences as the plot unfolds.

With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, a book by Peter Stone, and costumes and set by Stewart Laing, the musical, which creatively incorporates symphony elements combined with choruses, was a big winner at the 51th Tony Awards, bagging home five awards including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and Best Scenic Design.
